The etiquette is smaller than you think — five pieces of information, in the order guests expect. Everything else is voice. Here are copy-ready phrasings for the three styles couples ask for most.
Couples spend more time agonizing over invitation wording than over almost any other wedding decision, and most of the agony is unnecessary. The formal rules are short, they haven't really changed in a century, and they exist to answer a guest's practical questions in the first ten seconds of reading. Style is where you get to be yourselves.
Dress code, wedding website, and a translation are optional additions. A short line of poetry is entirely a matter of taste.
Formal wording is third-person and uses full names. It suits black-tie events, hotel ballrooms, and traditions that have been in the family a long time.

Note what the formality actually consists of: third person, spelled-out numbers, and the hosts named before the couple. If that feels like a production, it's fine to modernize any single element — the structure survives it.
Casual wording is first-person, warm, and short. It suits garden weddings, restaurants, and any couple whose invitation should sound like them talking.

First names instead of Mr. and Mrs., numerals instead of spelled-out dates, and a voice that sounds like a person. Casual doesn't mean careless — the five required parts are all still there.
Bilingual and cross-cultural invitations usually follow one of two patterns: English on the front with a translation on the back, or two languages side by side, separated by a thin rule. Either works. What matters is that neither language reads as the "real" one and the other as decoration.

Keep the two versions parallel — same information, same order — even when the sentence structures differ. Guests who read both languages notice mismatches; guests who read one language never do.
The most common wording failure isn't the invitation — it's the RSVP. Include all four elements:
A clean closing line: "The favour of your reply is requested by the first of November." Or, casually: "Let us know by November 1 — emilyandjames.com/rsvp."
Good wording needs a card that can carry it. The Ink & Bloom Wedding Invitation Suite is fully editable — every line of text, in any of the styles above, typed directly in your browser. If your tradition needs the date in Chinese numerals, or your reception line runs long, the card adapts.
